Why Challenge Changes Your Pain Journey

There was a Yoga Sutra we learned in our 200 hour training.

Sutra 2.3
अविद्यास्मितारागद्वेषाभिनिवेशाः क्लेशाः॥३॥
avidyā-asmitā-rāga-dveṣa-abhiniveśaḥ kleśāḥ

avidyā = nescience, ignorance
asmitā= egoism, the feeling of I-ness
rāga = desire, passion
dveṣa = hatred
abhiniveśaḥ = clinging to life
kleśāḥ = pain-causing, givers of grief
— Pantanjali

Take a moment to analyze these words on your own accord and see if you find some commonality with what I see in it.

When we are in our egoistic self we are ignorant because of our attachments.

You may find this when:

  • “I cant do that exercise because I know it will hurt”

  • “That person sounds terrible, I won’t believe a word they say”

  • “This cake is amazing, it is the only one I buy”

When we become so attached to something we become ignorant to everything else because we naturally go towards loving and hating things. However, when you learn to see it all then you may find even more reasonings, learnings and life than what we had previously experienced.

This may sound harsh but when we are in pain we get really comfortable in only moving, breathing and living life a very particular way because we fear what damage it may cause or what symptoms it will bring up again.

Clients often become

  • I stay home because traveling hurts my back

  • I stopped doing XYZ because it hurt later that day

  • The exercises they gave me made it worse and I now avoid those altogether

However, it has often times are the movements you do need as that is why the injury slowly built over time to be what it is now. Although finding the right guidance is truly what is best in our western medical world. There is the reality that we must do the movement we got hurt in so that we can improve it and learn how to prevent it from happening again. Building strength in the right areas and opening up areas that have been stiff causing an increased tension and torque when it is not needed.

Maybe you found this as insightful as I did. If you think you need a specialized assessment get to know us and our training through a consultation in Culver City or virtually online! I look forward to seeing you live pain free.
