Case Study: It only took one fall to change their world…

Introduction

One day out on a walk with their dog. It was but a usual day and a daily task. It took getting tangled in the leash to change it all. With pain around their back and knee led them to choose a slowed down way of life. Using an assistive walking device and no longer being able to move as freely as they used to. Life had changed drastically. This further led to side hip pain while trying to sleep and getting in/out of bed.

History

This client had a history of painless scoliosis and arthritis in their unaffected knee. Hammer toe developed later in life but did not cause any issues previously.

Challenges

A fear of falling again, not trusting their balance and overall muscle weakness. Has an adult child living at home to assist.

Pilates approach

The main focus for the client is assisting them to find a range of motion that feels comfortable for their knees while building strength in their quadriceps, hip flexors, glutes and abdominals. While also building strength in their upper body to assist with the development of overall balance and confidence in movement.

Pilates Exercises:

  • Mat modified quad sets

  • Mat modified abdominal exercises

  • Reformer footwork and single leg footwork

  • Tower arms springs seated and standing

  • Ladder barrel stretches for side body, chest and back

Results

In 3 months with 2 sessions a week the client has felt significant improvement in their walking abilities, leg strength and side hip pain. Their hip pain is nearly gone. Their walking has improved in a way that they are now able to walk their dog a bit easier while still using an assistive device.

Testimonial

I have mobility problems for over a year. Tried water exercises and PT with my health plan provider. It did not work. My neighbor who has similar issues has been going to Julie for a few months and experience big improvements in his gait and flexibility. I started seeing Julie for two months now and what a difference it makes. Her rehabilitation program is person-based, gears toward my needs verses one plan fits all. I feel so much more confident in my walking and my flexibility is much more prevalent. I am looking forward to be able to walk with my dog without a cane soon.
