I’m Constantly Getting Injured. Can Pilates Help?
Imagine you’re just enjoying a walk around the neighborhood taking in the fresh ocean air that Culver City gets from Marina del Rey, Venice Beach and Santa Monica. Noticing how it feels to be moving so well after last year of dealing with a chronic pain that took a while for physical therapy to treat and it’s been manageable but still noticeable from time to time.
Sometimes just in a certain movement or a certain time of day, like it’s always there to just remind you of it. Let’s say it was your left knee that was your last year issue. Well after your walk you’re home and just finishing up dinner when you suddenly get a sharp pain in your left hip that takes the breath right out of you. It lasts for about a week of aching hip pain that gets worse when you are asleep sometimes waking you up. Yikes. Well it’s back to PT again, I guess.
This is the cycle of what oftentimes happens from a joint injury that may have happened last year or decades ago.
Why it happens
There’s a small part of rehabilitation that doesn’t get addressed and often times may even be exacerbated as the focus is solely on the injured part of the body and maybe it’s because insurance only approves so much or that the clinic runs a tight shift but you don’t get a lot of attention or guidance on how to continue with these exercises they’ve given you.
The culprit maybe your Compensation which “refers to the body's recruitment of alternative muscles or movement patterns to perform a task when the primary muscles or movement patterns are weak, limited, or painful, potentially leading to inefficient movement and increased risk of injury.”
I’ve found that not everyone can recruit their muscles the same as others and this leads to you doing exercises that may not even be hitting the right muscle for you to fully progress. It can also mean in your day to day you are still utilizing your unaffected side more than you think. Which in the long term may lead towards another injury.
These instances are often seen when you know someone who had a replacement and then a few years later had another one come up just in the same way without an accident or reason for it needing to happen.
How Pilates Might Work
Pilates instructors can be, but are not formerly trained in rehabilitation. They are educated enough to provide an exercise routine for the general public as we refer to as “the average Joe”. You can have an excellent pilates instructor or personal strength coach but once you’ve had a few too many injuries you wonder if it’s even good for you anymore? Well that’s where we come in at MVNT Studio our goal is to help you return to the life that inspires you to live and thrive!
How Our Studio Differs from PT and Pilates
Combining pilates, holistic health, corrective exercise and physical therapy aware procedures we create a plan and routine for you to do that helps your injury, your compensation patterns, and muscular imbalances that may be a cause of tension in other parts of your body. This combined, focused and developed work not only helps you reduce pain but allows you to reduce reinjury, prevent future set backs and plan to be healthier than you’ve ever been before!
How can I find someone like you near me?
I know there are many clients out there beyond my city looking for this exact method of healing and these would be the most important details to find someone who can help you best:
Are these trainers/pilates instructors
experienced in teaching more than 3-5 years?
have a college education in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or Physical Therapy?
experienced in your particular injury and rehabilitation needs?
do they have any clinical experience that does not involve themselves?
experienced in teaching private sessions more than 3-5 years?
can they explain movements to you that is understandable to your level of muscle awareness?
can they provide several versions of exercises when you are feeling pain or discomfort?
are they able to provide you guidance on the difference of your muscle working and level of pain you’ve been feeling?
These to me are far more important in continued progress in your exercise routine because old injuries often will bring up a new ache and a new pain temporarily while muscles start to become balanced and eventually no longer will be present when the “full cycle” of healing is completed.
Although I can not guarantee there is someone like me out there I hope you find this useful for your continued care. If you feel inclined and have time to meet with me virtually as well training online can be just as useful to you with a trained eye to guide you.
Sessions online can help you get started towards the life you truly want to live and enjoy!
