Education is a Cornerstone to Our Lessons

I have a funny thing with education. For the longest time I never enjoyed learning anything besides science, art, PE depending on the teacher and the school I was at. I never found myself as an extremely smart student because how few things from english, math and history that I ever retained. Turns out I just needed to learn things I liked and improve my mental health too.

The last almost decade of teaching I have always taken some sort of continued education course(s) to expand my understanding of people and why some reasons people feel movements differently. So many reasons and so many options to help people.

As I have continued my learning in the BASI Pilates format through the Legacy program that includes: Mentor, Master 1, Master 2, and Honors. These specifically are meant for the instructor to find their passion and love for pilates as someone who also needs to continue their practice in it. For me it gives me a lot of belief and understanding of where someone can go, especially for the ones I am medically unable to do while others can without a problem.

My experience in this longer journey of being and learning pilates in a deeper sense is that, everything starts from the beginning. The fundamental work is what prepares someone into the deeper advanced work rather than to make a performance out of an exercise. Yes you can do it pretty and fluid and almost to perfection visually but without utilizing the right muscle groups you are likely, in the longterm, cause an overuse injury that comes from repetitive incorrect muscle coordination.

I have learned so much, and I do ask many questions now as a teacher. Even if for some it makes sense and for me is to ask for clarity and precision. I plan to continue in the work and hope one day it gets me as a happy and health 90yo still doing pilates and movement without my own fears and hesitations!
